Gail Chandler

Texas Instruments Public Affairs specialist, Gail Chandler delivered impressive information regarding Corporate Social Responsibility. She shared her first experience of non-profit work at Good Will, "I was making $550 a month...I was not making much, but I wrote press releases, media pitches and I worked on planning events. It was very good experience,"said Chandler. Even before her position at TI, Chandler emphasized the importance of working in the community through her various work experiences.

"Life is too short to work where you do not like," stated Chandler. I feel that her philosophy is definitely one that I can relate to. I strongly believe that certain traits of the organization an individual decides to work for should be aligned with the traits of that particular individual. If someone is passionate about the environment and wildlife preservation, they should work with an organization that reflects just that, like the World Wildlife Foundation. If someone is passionate about students and education, they should work at a college or university to contribute to the field of education.

"We contribute to science education and for the world to be safer, greener, smarter and healthier...by making the world a better place," said Chandler. TI is advancing with new innovations and technologies that benefit the health and science community. Recent science technology at TI includes artificial retinas, artificial limbs and onsite sonograms for the purpose of determining physical injuries. Through these technological advances, the Corporate Social Responsibility is truly making a difference for the people of the community by providing health improving technology.

Environmental issues are also being addressed at TI though eco-friendly products. "Environmental problems with too much electric waste," stated Chandler, led to the invention of the universal phone charger. Small contributions that major corporations give the world make a huge impact on decreasing the problems with overwhelming landfills in the future. I feel that TI considers all of the world when running their organization and it is refreshing to know that there are corporation that care about the environment.

TI also encourages employees to volunteer weekly in the community with a non-profit organization they are passionate and care about. "Employees who volunteer a certain amount of hours can win donations for their charity," says Chandler. Positive encouragement for employees to give back to their community is a trait I feel all corporations should have. Corporate Social Responsibility is something that every corporation should participate in and incorporate to their organization.

After the presentation, I realized that when I do begin to work, I want to work for an organization that incorporates the community into the workforce. "We believe strong companies build strong communities and strong communities build strong companies," said Chandler. I definitely agree with this statement and feel Corporate Social Responsibility should be present in every organization across the world. Thank you for your insight Gail Chandler!!!
